Recently, we have had some issues with our Yakama Sky Rise HD roof top tent. Read about the causes of these issues in Frozen Adventure and Ice Damage.
Over the past year we have thoroughly enjoyed our time in the roof top tent, it has been like a tiny home to us and we are not ready to give it up.
Here follows what we have done to try and restore the tent to its former glory.
Mold Be GONE
Wiping down entire inside of the tent, including both sides of the mesh windows, with a Lysol mixture and then a Lemon mixture got rid of the mold. With drying time, assisted by fans, the process took approximately 2 hours. This process came from Yakima support’s document called “Roof Top Tent Care and Maintenance”, you can find it here.
Re-Water-Proofing
After researching and recommendations from the SkyRise manufacturing team we used Nikwax Tent & Gear Solarproof Spray. The process was fairly easy, easier with two people. We brought the tent off the car, down to the ground so that we could easily reach every part. Then Mouse sprayed while Frog followed with a rag. We used exactly one 17fl oz. bottle to cover both the rainfly and the tent. We were probably a little liberal with the coating, but no regrets, it only took a bit longer to dry. The process took approximately 3 hours. Click here for a helpful YouTube tutorial made by the Nikwax company.
Resealing the inside of the tent with GearAid Sealant + Adhesive where needed was an extra precaution as no seams were unraveling yet.
Ladder Maintenance
Silicone Spray. Just like DW40, but kinder to plastics and perfect for the SkyRise ladder. Spray in all the joints, careful not to get on the stepping surfaces. Again, easier with two people, but doable with one. Process took about 20-30 minutes.
Condensation Battle
Tent Fan. We got the OPOLAR 5000mAh Camping Lantern. check it out here at opolar.com.
Moisture Candle Lantern. Gifted to us by concerned parents. We are excited to try. Check it out here at UCO Gear
Condensation mat. The Thule Tepui Anti-Condensation Mat – Kukenam/Autana 3 is built for the Tepui brand roof top tent. But it fits perfectly in our skyrise. check it out here at REI.
These three new pieces of equipment have yet to be tested by The Pack. We will keep you updated on how they work for us.
